To maintain freshness, we recommend storing dates in the fridge.
NB: We have 3 different kinds of Organic Medjool Dates in our product offering, here is how to tell them apart...
Medjool dates are graded based on their size, weight and skin separation and this forms the product name. The large dates are indeed larger than the medium in size and weight. They are all rather succulent and delicious, however the most premium are indeed the premium ones, that have less skin separation. If you want the best of the best pick the large premium.
The grading of Medjool dates, including weight and skin separation, is done soon after harvest when packing. As a natural product, their condition will change over time due to variations in moisture and storage conditions and time from harvest. These changes are normal and do not affect the original quality or grade.
HOW TO USE
Medjool dates are very popular as a snack on their own, in muesli mixes and in baking. They are delicious in cakes, biscuits, puddings and a variety of savoury dishes or curries. Don't forget to remove the pits!
Storage:
Organic Medjool Dates are a preservative-free, raw product, high in sugar and moisture.
In winter sometimes the dates can start to crystallise - and may have a white sugary appearance - but they are fine to eat! In summer higher temperatures can cause the moisture and the sugar in the fruit to react (starting the fermentation process).
Overall to get the best from your dates, we highly recommend refrigeration throughout the year.
GROWING & PROCESSING
Organic Medjool dates are grown from date palm trees primarily in regions with warm climates such as the Middle East, North Africa, Mexico and some parts of the United States like California and Arizona.
Growing: Date palm trees require hot and dry conditions to thrive. They are typically planted in sandy soils with good drainage. Adequate irrigation is crucial & it takes several years for date palms to mature and start producing fruit.
Harvesting: Organic Medjool dates are harvested when they reach maturity, typically in late summer to early fall. The clusters of ripe fruit are often picked by hand. Because they are hand-picked the most delicate juicy Medjool dates can be selected. Harvesting requires skill and caution to avoid damaging the delicate fruit.
Processing and Grading: Once picked the dates are quickly sent for sorting and grading. The process is very labour-intensive and much care is put into the harvest, but we think you will taste the difference! These dates are packed in a state-of-the-art packing facility right next to the plantations which means that dates can be picked and placed in cool storage within a couple of hours. That keeps freshness and flavour and enhances our quality. Medjool dates are like a fruit, so when travelling long distances, such as to Australia they are usually shipped frozen to keep them fresh.
Sustainability of Medjool date farming
Date palms are relatively low-maintenance and resilient to harsh growing conditions, making them a sustainable crop choice for farmers in arid regions. Additionally, they play a crucial role in preserving soil and preventing desertification.
Biodiversity & Carbon Sequestration: Date palm orchards provide habitat and food sources for various wildlife species, including birds and insects. Maintaining biodiversity in agricultural landscapes contributes to ecosystem health and resilience. Date palm trees, sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in their biomass and soil which can help mitigate climate change by capturing and storing carbon.
Soil Conservation: Date palm cultivation helps prevent soil erosion and desertification, particularly in arid regions, protecting the soil for future generation. The extensive root systems of date palm trees stabilise soil, reduce wind erosion, and contribute to soil fertility.
Agriculture plays a significant role in the livelihoods of communities, particularly in regions like the Arava and Jordan Valleys in the south east of Israel, where our current dates are sourced. The primary source of income for residents in this area is agriculture. This farming community exemplify the triumph of human spirit over challenges in their remarkable achievement of the young and old from many different cultural backgrounds and nationalities coming together to make the desert bloom!
