The Morning Ritual: A Naturopath’s Guide to Glowing Skin & Stable Energy

March 5, 2026 Honest To Goodness

When it comes to clearing acne and reclaiming your vitality, the most profound changes often start on your breakfast plate. Today, we’re sitting down with Phoebe Ackland, a Naturopath specialising in women’s skin, gut and hormonal health.

Based in her thriving online clinic, Phoebe helps women uncover the root causes of skin distress through the "Gut-Skin Axis." By blending clinical nutrition with mindful rituals, she empowers women to achieve a healthy glow from the inside out.

Q: You treat women with acne and hormonal imbalances every day. What is the #1 "gamechanger" you recommend to your clients?

Phoebe: It’s surprisingly simple, yet most people miss it: starting the day with a high-protein breakfast, specifically a minimum of 30g of protein! This is one of the best ways to stabilise your blood sugar and energy levels throughout the day.

When your blood sugar is stable, you curb sugar cravings and reduce anxiety. Most importantly for my clients, stable blood sugar is essential for clearing acne. It’s the nutritional foundation I build for almost everyone I treat in my clinic.

Q: You’ve been loving a specific "Glowing Skin" Smoothie lately. How do you hit that protein goal?

Phoebe: This morning I made a delicious smoothie using vanilla protein powder to ensure I hit that 30g mark. Here is my go-to recipe:

Ingredients:

Method:

This isn't just a drink; it’s functional medicine in a glass. It has healthy fats and fibre to get the bowels moving. I specifically recommend adding collagen peptide because it helps repair the intestinal lining and supports bouncy, youthful skin by strengthening the dermis.

Q: Let’s talk caffeine. Many people reach for coffee the moment they feel a dip. Is coffee a "friend or foe"?

Phoebe: Coffee definitely has its virtues! I don’t tell all my clients to quit completely, but I teach them how to enjoy it smartly. To make coffee a "friend," never drink it on an empty tummy! Always eat your high protein breakfast first.

If you’re experiencing anxiety or headaches, I highly recommend swapping your morning coffee for a matcha latte. I’ve been using the Honest to Goodness Matcha and noticed a vibrant, sustained release of energy without the "crash and burn."

Because it’s rich in L-theanine, a matcha latte provides a state of calm focus rather than the jitters. It’s also packed with EGCG, an antioxidant that reduces inflammation in both the gut and the skin.

Q: Many women eat well and sleep 8 hours, yet they’re still exhausted. What is going on there?

Phoebe: It is so frustrating to feel like you’re doing everything right but still feel crappy. If your lifestyle looks great, I suggest looking into two things:

  • Ensure you aren't having caffeine on an empty stomach.
  • Get comprehensive blood work done to assess nutrient status and adrenal function.

As a Naturopath, I use these results to see what is truly impacting your vitality. We also have beautiful herbs to help boost your energy levels naturally.

Q: What does your ideal morning ritual look like?

Phoebe: I LOVE my morning routine - the best part of my day happens before 8 am. I’m an early bird, up before the sunrise. I’ll start with a quiet moment on my balcony for gratitude journaling, maybe a small bite to eat, and then my workout. I always finish with a sunrise walk by the sea. Creating a routine that makes you want to jump out of bed was a huge part of my own healing journey.

Phoebe’s "Glowing Skin" Shopping List:

At the heart of every health journey is the simple, honest act of choosing what serves your body best. Whether you’re whisking up a vibrant matcha latte for a calm morning focus or blending a high protein breakfast with protein powder, you are doing more than just eating - you are communicating with your hormones, your gut, and your skin.

As Phoebe reminds us, "Healing isn’t about perfection; it’s about creating a routine that makes you want to jump out of bed." By prioritising quality ingredients and stable blood sugar, you aren't just chasing a "glow", you’re building a foundation of vitality that lasts well beyond the morning sunrise.
